Based in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI) is a non-profit research company dedicated to urban habitat research.

Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI) is a Malaysian independent non-profit research and development company, dedicated towards undertaking basic and applied research in disciplines relating to urban habitat and high-rise.[1] Its operations is housed in the Dewan Sultan Iskandar building at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) campus in Skudai, Johor Bahru.


2.   Brief background: Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI) was established in 1991 by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with the United States' Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Initial endowment was provided by Sultan Iskandar, the Sultan of Johor. The institute is governed by a Board of Trustees and is staffed by a management team of specialist professionals, under the leadership of its Executive Director.


3.   Aims: Set up to serve the needs of the Malaysian government, and the private sector, as well as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI) aims to:

  • undertake basic and applied research in disciplines relating to urban habitat and high-rise;
  • assist Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in its research and postgraduate programmes;
  • provide relevant solutions to the problems of urban habitat and high-rise buildings through research, training, and professional services;
  • collaborate with related institutions internationally;
  • promote new thinking on issues of national, regional, and international dimensions regarding the urban habitat and its attendant environmental and social issues.
