The Johor Bahru Central District Master Plan is a project that aims at transform the central district of Johor Bahru into a high-technology financial centre and the gateway to the rapidly industrializing region of south Johor. The project, an initiative of the Johor state government, was prepared by the Institute Sultan Iskandar of Urban Habitat and Highrise, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

2.   In presenting the Master Plan, the Johor state government was responding to the pressures of a rapidly growing population in the capital of the fastest-growing state in Malaysia. When it was first unveiled to the public in February 1997, however Chinese organizations were dismayed to note that an important arterial road named after a prominent Chinese would be replaced by gardens and a city walk to be named after Johor's first Sultan and appealed against its removal.[1] Several roads in Johor Bahru are named after 19th century Chinese pioneers and their names and biographies form part of the Chinese historical memory in the city.
