Johor Bahru... call it the Shenzhen of Singapore if you want, or is it more like the Haadyai of Singapore instead? Geographically we are one, so near and yet, politically, we are further apart than Madagascar. "Prosper thy neighbour," proclaimed one political chief and before you could understand the message, a blizzard of issues followed in its wake. And you may think, what humbug! No, no, no... no humbug at all, I tell you... it's a real Big Mac hamburger, if not for you, at least for us! For when he said "prosper thy neighbour", what he actually meant was prosper us, for aren't we thy neighbour?
And then out of the blue, arises the idea of an expensive crooked bridge to replace the low-maintenance cost causeway. Yet we must accept that crooked is scenic to some, for if a crab can walk sideways, believing it to be the most gracefulest gait, who are we to say that it is not. So let us agree to disagree. And believe me, the price of toll charges is only a nightmare to those who have to use it everyday but is, indeed, pop music to the ear to those who have a share in the proposed privatized bridge.
We are no Mahatma Gandhi, so let us not pretend to altruism. In so long as we try not to impoverish others, that should suffice. For we are of one race, the human race, and if Voltaire were right, also of one religion, as when he said: "When it is a question of money, everybody is of the same religion".
Current debates over political boundaries suggest that rather than bordered nation-states, we are heading toward a more borderless world, with fluid borders and more interdependence among nation states.[1] Multinational companies are of growing importance and new business units develop which are no longer tied to any nation. Which country can be responsible, since they are no longer neatly definable.
