2. Brief background: Muhyiddin was born in Muar, Johor to an Islamic theologian and cleric. He joined UMNO in 1971, the year he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Malay Studies from Universiti Malaya, and became the 4th Menteri Besar of Johor in August 1986.
In April 1995, Muhyiddin contested the Pagoh parliamentary seat and subsequently headed 3 ministries before winning the Deputy President post which was vacated by Najib Tun Razak who became the Acting President of UMNO upon the retirement of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He defeated Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib (Rural and Regional Development Minister), garnering 1,575 votes to Muhammad Taib's 916. Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam (Chief Minister of Melaka), who had also contested the Deputy President post, had earlier been disqualified after his assistants were found to be involved in money politics. In accordance with UMNO tradition, Najib Tun Razak then promoted Muhyiddin to Deputy Prime Minister in April 2009.
