Sekolah Dato Jaafar in Bukit Senyum
Sekolah Dato' Jaafar is a national secondary school at Jalan yahya Aldatar, Bukit Senyum in Johor Bahru. It was named after Dato' Jaafar bin Mohamed, the first Menteri Besar of Johor, and the grandfather of Malaysia's 3rd Prime Minister, Tun Hussein Onn.
2. Brief history: Sekolah Dato' Jaafar was started as a modest English secondary school at the Bukit Senyum palace (beside the present school building) in 1961. Construction of the present school was completed in 1964 and officially given its present name.[1] Its brass band was once sought after, including outside Johor, in the late 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. The school's principals and teachers included J.G. Putucheary and Harbajan Singh (principals), Tan Meng Kwang (sports teacher) and A. Kumar (English academician).
3. Alumni: The Jaafarian Old Boys, or the SDJ Alumni has some 1,000 registered members.[1] Its current president is Datuk Syed Hussein Alhabshee (born c. 1940) who is an entrepreneur who was once the country's envoy to Dubai and Saudi Arabia. On 19 February 2011, the SDJ Alumni celebrated the school's 50th anniversary celebration at the Persada Convention Centre. The highlights of its dinner was a performance by Amy Search and Awang BPR, two Jaafarians who are among the nation's prominent rock stars, and the Jaafarian trio of Kenny, Remy and Martin who made a name for themselves in the 1980s for their hit, Ku Petik Bintang Bintang.
