2. Born in Singapore, Wong Siew Kuan had to sacrifice his education in order to help his father, Wong Ah Fook, with his vast business and investment. This responsibility traditionally fell on the eldest son of the family but Wong Siew Nam, his eldest brother, had been sent by their father to Guangzhou to sit for the imperial examination so as to win honor for the family.

3. Wong Siew Kuan became his father's chief assistant, not only in running the rubber estates but also in managing Him Yuen, the estate management company that was set up to manage the family's extensive properties.[1] According to the wishes of his father, he married a girl from Hong Kong, Mok Poh Choong, who bore him a son, Wong Peng Siong. Wong eventually married four other wives, but only Ha Wan Heng, his fourth wife, bore him 6 other children.

3. During the Kwong Yik Bank crisis in 1913, however, Wong came in for much family criticism because he was his father's chief assistant. Sometime after his mother's death in 1932, he retired to Hong Kong but his son, Peng Siong, and his family remained in Singapore.[2]
